Kanat Saudabaev, a former Kazak ambassador to the United States and Canada, is to replace Oralbay Abdykarimov as State Secretary.

Abdykarimov has been made an advisor to President Nursultan Nazarbaev.

NBCentralAsia observers believe Saudabaev will be more politically influential as State Secretary, given his diplomatic and ministerial experience.

Saudabaev served as Kazak foreign minister in 1994, and has also been head of the prime minister’s office and ambassador to Turkey, Britain and the US.
