Former Baku police chief Maherram Aliev has been appointed Azerbaijani ambassador to Tajikistan. The appointment follows Tajik president Imomali Rahmon’s first trip to Azerbeijan on August 13-14, where both sides confirmed a March agreement to open embassies and strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Analysts say both countries are keen to expand their relationship. The Tajiks stand to gain from cooperation on energy, while Azerbaijan is looking for international support for its demand that the separatist territory of Nagorny Karabakh be returned to its rule.
