The first ever open-heart surgery to be conducted in Afghanistan was completed successfully on April 4. Rahima Stanikzai, a doctor at the French Medical Institute for Afghan Children in Kabul, said, “Elaha, 12, who had been suffering from serious heart disease and who should have been taken abroad for treatment, was successfully operated on by a team of French and Afghan doctors in Kabul on Wednesday.” The operation lasted five and a half hours. Elaha was said to be in satisfactory condition 24 hours later.
