Eyewitnesses Recall 1990s Tajik Civil War

In this programme, people from the southern Tajik city of Qorghan-Teppa recall their memories of the civil war which ended with a peace agreement 25 years ago.

The war pitted government forces against Islamist and other groups in the United Tajik Opposition between 1992 and 1997.

The worst of the fighting took place at the beginning, over the summer and autumn of 1992, and much of it was around Qorghan-Teppa. Tens of thousands were killed in the war and hundreds of thousands displaced, many moving to Afghanistan until the peace deal was signed in Moscow.

One interviewee, Alisher, lost his father in the war, and spent time in Afghanistan as a child

“The burnt-out houses are still standing,” he said. “We look at them and feel very sad.”

The audio programme, in Tajik and Russian, went out on national radio stations in Tajikistan, as part of IWPR project work funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
