The visit of incoming prime minister Nouri al-Maliki to some Marjaiyas (top Shia clerics) in Najaf is a positive step to enhance and strengthen Iraqi national unity. It represents an official acknowledgment of the important role the Marjaiyas play in Iraq, which no one can deny. (They are) part of the cultural and social construction of this country. The Marjaiyas could play a greater role in confronting the religious extremists and the sectarian conflict by using their authority to spread a culture of forgiveness and expel sectarian sensitivities. These steps could enhance peace and stability. Maliki knows that there are several religious and ethnic Marjaiyas in Iraq that he should visit to in order to (have equal relationships) with all of the different Marjaiyas and not be closer to one, especially his own. By doing so, Maliki will continue enhancing national unity and crossing ethnic barriers. No one wants those lines to split a unified citizenry.
