The Syrian government should not be the only party responsible for making economic decisions after it proved to be insensitive to citizens’ interests, said Waseem al-Dahhan in an August 9 opinion article in Qasion newspaper.

All the government procedures and economic decisions taken lately have negatively affected the livelihoods of the Syrian people, he wrote, urging officials to find solutions to the social and economic problems facing Syria.

Dahhan blamed the government for making unilateral decisions without involving other parties and said the failure of economic policies was caused by a lack of accountability.

The Syrian parliament does not discharge its role of questioning the government, he said. There were question marks about the legitimacy of the parliament since many believed its members were appointed and not really elected, he added.

He also accused the government of ignoring “the interests of the poor majority while working hard to achieve those of the rich minority.”

The Syrian people were suffering because of the government’s liberal policies, the deterioration of their living standards and a defective system of accountability, he said.
