Hayatullah, the administrative head of Shah Wali Kot district in the southern province of Kandahar, was killed along with two bodyguards in an improvised mine blast in the district late on December 2. Haji Qader Khan, the district police chief, blamed Taleban insurgents for the attack, saying Hayatullah was travelling in the district when a mine went off, killing him and his two bodyguards and wounding three others. According to the police chief, a number of suspects have been arrested and a search operation has been launched.
