Defence ministry dismisses Taleban's casualty claims

Hewad is a state-run daily published mostly in Pashto.

Afghan defence ministry spokesman Mohammad Zahir Azimi on April 17 rejected claims by Taleban that they had killed 10 US-led Coalition soldiers in the eastern province of Kunar. A purported Taleban spokesman had claimed that the rebels killed 10 American soldiers in the Karangal area and destroyed two military vehicles. The defence ministry denied this, adding that the mopping-up operation would continue until the area is completely cleared of hostile forces. The operation, conducted by Coalition and Afghan National Army forces, has been going on for four days and has so far left eight militants dead and four others wounded.
