Cleric gunned down in Kandahar

Islah is a state-run daily published mostly in Dari.

Gunmen shot and killed a member of the Ulema Council of the southern province of Kandahar on the night of April 14. Maulawi Sayed Massoud was killed near his home in the Zirai district, Ulema Council member Sayed Imamuddin Mutawali. Mutawali said his late colleague had given sermons on provincial radio and television, and had previously received warnings from the Taleban to stop supporting the Afghan government. Eleven religious scholars have been killed by gunmen in Kandahar since the fall of the Taleban regime.
