Christians and Muslims live in harmony in Syria but mixed marriages remain socially and legally difficult. The country has no system of civil marriage so those who want to breach religious barriers have to change their faith or marry abroad. For years, civil rights advocates have been calling for a modern personal status code that would guarantee equality before the law for all citizens.
