Turkmen president Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov will pay an official visit to Moscow on April 23-24 to discuss energy with Russia. Experts expect that Turkmenistan will grant Russia the formal status of a “strategic foreign policy partner”. Moscow has stepped up relations with Turkmenistan since the late president Saparmurat Niazov died in December. Niazov effectively halted the work of an intergovernmental commission and suspended a dual citizenship agreement, but judging by a new strategy currently being drafted in Turkmenistan, relations are about to improve. Russia is the major buyer of Turkmen gas and has agreed a 25-year purchase deal.
