The head of Kabul University [and former Afghan finance minister], Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, is the first Afghan to run for the post of United Nations Secretary General.

The 10-year tenure of the current Secretary General, Kofi Annan, runs out at the end of this year and his replacement should start work at the beginning of 2007. So far five people have put themselves forwards: former US president Bill Clinton and Ashraf Ghani are at the top of the list.
