The general labourers’ union has denounced a spate of attacks on Syrian workers in Lebanon, the Baath newspaper reported on May 12.

The union did not say how many workers were attacked, but said some of them were shot. The state-run news agency SANA reported that some were beaten and stabbed.

On May 15, SANA reported that Social Affairs and Labour Minister Diyala Hajj Aref had visited the labourers.

The union called on the Lebanese authorities to investigate the incident and punish those found responsible. The union said Syrian workers in Lebanon had been tortured, beaten and killed in the past despite helping to rebuild the country after the years of civil war and assisting economic development.
