An ethnic Kurd serving with the Syrian military in the northeastern province of Hasaka died earlier this month under mysterious circumstances, according to a statement published on January 19 on the website of the Kurdish Organisation for the Defence of Human Rights and Liberties in Syria.

Barkhadan Khaled Hamo of Aleppo died on January 10. In December, the body of Swar Timmo, who was serving at the Air Force Technical Academy, was returned to his family after authorities reported that he had committed suicide.

The Kurdish rights organisation expressed concern at the growing number of soldiers dying while during military service in Syria. It said 15 soldiers had now died in Hasaka province since a Kurdish uprising there in 2004.
