Afghanistan’s new parliament formally opened in Kabul on December 19 with the recitation of verses from the Koran. It is the first elected legislature in 30 years. In his opening remarks, President Hamed Karzai urged members to serve the people. He said the Afghan government wants to have friendly relations - based on non-interference and coexistence - with all countries, especially with its neighbours and the Muslim world. United States vice-president Dick Cheney and other foreign dignitaries attended the inaugural session.
