17 июля в столице Армении Ереване вооруженная группа, состоящая более чем из десяти человек, захватила полицейский участок и взяла нескольких заложников, в том числе и заместителя начальника полиции Армении. Хотя впоследствии несколько заложников были освобождены, напряженное противостояние продолжалось в течение последних пяти дней.

Вооруженные лица состоят в маргинальном оппозиционном движении Учредительный парламент. Они требовали освобождения своего лидера Жирайра Сефиляна, который был арестован в прошлом месяце, и отставки президента Армении Сержа Саргсяна.

Полиция перекрыла улицы, ведущие к полицейскому участку, и стала задерживать жителей, собиравшихся в центре города.

Вечером 20 июля полиция вступила в столкновение с толпой из нескольких сотен демонстрантов, выражавших поддержку вооруженным лицам. На следующее утро, министерство здравоохранения сообщило о том, что был госпитализирован 51 человек, в том числе 29 полицейских.

Насилие началось после того, как полиция не разрешила передать захватчикам заложников еду, которую принесли демонстранты.
