An official newspaper has accused Syria’s political opponents in Lebanon of allowing spy rings working for Israel to operate in their country.

The March 14 coalition – an anti-Syrian political alliance, which until last year dominated parliament – used Beirut’s security resources against Damascus instead of trying to stop the “real danger” threatening Lebanon, wrote pro-government newspaper Al-Watan in an opinion piece published on May 18.

The article said that since 2005 – when it became the most powerful group in parliament – the alliance focused its attention on implementing the US agenda in the region, which according to him, is aimed at disarming militant movements fighting against Israel.

Subsequent security measures taken by the group weakened Lebanon’s “immunity” against infiltration by the Israeli secret services, it added.

The daily concluded that it was only when March 14 lost its political grip over Lebanon in May last year – when the country’s political leaders agreed to follow a new national unity government – that the country’s secret services able to uncover a series of local espionage networks run by the Israelis.

Over the past few months, Lebanon has declared its authorities have arrested several alleged spy agents, suspected of sending sensitive information about Syria and militant group Hezbollah to the Israeli secret services.
