Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. and The New York Times Company and the Trustees of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting co-hosted a private cocktail reception celebrating LOCAL VOICES, GLOBAL COVERAGE. Ian Fisher, the Deputy Foreign Editor of the New York Times, discussed the critical work of local journalists in areas of crisis and conflict, such as those trained and supported through the IWPR network, and the vital role global dissemination of their stories serves in informing international debate and driving change. Gideon D’Arcangelo, VP of Strategy at ESI Design, spoke about his firm’s work in redesigning IWPR’s online news and programming platform and the importance of the media pipeline in disseminating crucial information.

The event featured a discussion, 6 Years Later, IWPR in Iraq: Giving Voice, Driving Change, with Ammar Al Shahbander, Chief of Mission in Iraq, Janet Benshoof, Esq., President & Founder of Global Justice Center, and Sean Maguire, the Global Editor for Political News at Thomson Reuters. The panelists spoke of their experiences reporting from Iraq and of prospects for civil society building.

The event featured a brief discussion, 6 Years Later, IWPR in Iraq: Giving Voice, Driving Change, with Ammar Al Shahbander, IWPR’s Chief of Mission in Iraq, and Dr. Toby Dodge, Consulting Senior Fellow for the Middle East, International Institute for Strategic Studies. The conversation offered behind the scenes perspectives on the recent elections and regional implications, legal and security issues, human rights, civil society building and other top concerns in Iraq.
