Inside sources have told Asharq al-Awsat that United States diplomats were present at an October 30 dialogue between Iraqi government officials and military, political and tribal figures including Baathists, that took place in the Iraqi embassy in Jordan. The talks are intended to pave the way for a broader reconciliation conference due to take place in Baghdad in mid-November. Talks with Jordanian-based Iraqis will last three days and touch on the questions of dissolving militias, reviving the old Iraqi army and ending the de-Baathification programme.
