Article evaluation

As part of our integrated approach to training and editing, editors fill out an evaluation form for each article. This form is a separate document file from the article. (download them together here)

On 6 September 2001, the London editorial staff met and decided to start using the new form right away. Here are the key points from that meeting, including instructions on how to fill out the form:

Overall plan

  • filled out only for first English edit by first English editor
  • we'll move to other languages once this is established for English
  • it will add 15 minutes to editing time
  • other editors should make comments on the form as well, with their name preceding the comment
  • number scores less important than three or four sentences in each box
  • good comments now will lead to better articles in future.

The form itself

  • blank forms live in your Word document template folder

New versions of the form

  • the evaluation form is evolving over the next few months, based on editor feedback
  • will arrive in your inbox from time to time as we improve the form
  • these need to be added as official Word templates

    • it is saved as a .dot file (document template)
    • in the email, right click on the attachment
    • select "Save as…"
    • if you have Word 97, save the file in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates
    • if you have a newer version of Word, save it in: C:\windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
    • if you don't know which version of Word you have, go to "Help" in the Menu bar and select "About Microsoft Word"
  • now, when you go to "File" in the Menu bar of Word and select "New", the evaluation form option will be there so you can use it for every article

Using the form

  • the form is constantly "turned on" (do not worry about "protect" and "unprotect")
  • simply use the arrow keys to work through the form and fill it in
  • use your initials when making comments in the lower section

File naming convention

When you name each evaluation file, use this format:

eval (three-letter country) (subject) (six-digit date) (author's last name)

So, some examples might be:

"eval MAC tetovo police 092501 petruseva"

"eval UZB termez bridge 221001 dubov"
